EV charger installation

A Level 2 charger on a dedicated 240V circuit turns overnight charging from a trickle into a full battery. Getting there safely depends on your panel: how much capacity it has left and how far it is from where you park.

We install Tesla Wall Connectors, ChargePoint and other hardwired chargers, and NEMA 14-50 outlets for plug-in units. We start with a load calculation so the charger fits your panel, not the other way around.

Signs you need this

  • You just bought (or ordered) an electric or plug-in hybrid car
  • Charging from a regular 120V outlet takes too long
  • Your charger needs a hardwired 240V circuit
  • You are not sure your panel can handle another big circuit

Questions

What size circuit does my charger need?

It depends on the charger and your car. Chargers are sized so they run at no more than 80% of the circuit, so a charger that pulls 48 amps needs a 60 amp circuit, and one that pulls 32 amps needs 40. We match the circuit to the charger and to what your panel can spare.

Will I need a panel upgrade?

Sometimes. If the load calculation shows your panel is near its limit, we will explain the options, which can include a smaller charging setting, load management, or a service upgrade.

Hardwired charger or NEMA 14-50 outlet?

Both work. A hardwired wall charger is tidy and can usually charge faster; an outlet lets you unplug and take a portable unit with you. We will tell you which fits your car and garage.
